Seeds: Baker Creek Italian DandelionPlanted: 4:30 PM Aerogarden: 2009 6 Elite+ (airstone model) Location: North 40, office Water: tap, filtered, Big Berkey Grow Medium: 2009 AG Grow Anything sponges Plants and seed naming are strange. Apparently Italian Dandelion is not actually a dandelion, but a chicory. Even so, it sounds like a nutritious green, looks pretty, and had good reviews. This garden is being rebooted as just Italian dandelions. The two Japanese dandelion seedlings have been moved to a different garden.

OK, maybe I'm botching this. I guess I should start a new thread, as I couldn't delete stuff below the first post.

Day 8We have some chicory action in two pods. No sign of anything in the left-hand pod. As for the Japanese dandelion seeds, they are just sitting there. The packet says 5-10 days for germination. But consulting Google, it might be up to 21 days. I'm thinking I'll pre-soak in the future, see if that helps. Or try the Ziploc baggie trick. Meanwhile, we wait.

The Italian dandelion seeds in the left hand pod might be duds. No sign of action. I think I'll try a Ziploc baggie, put a couple seeds in, see if that can get something germinated before the rest get going too far.
Meanwhile, today, finally, action from one of the Japanese dandelion pods. Nothing is up yet, but I see a bit of green from a seed.

Day 16
Rinse and refill! PH was at 8.5, with the Italian Dandelion seedlings looking QUITE unhappy!
Added MaxiGro at a 1/2 TSP per gallon.
After the refill, we are at PH 6.5, EC 0.9. I added another 1ml of PH Down to see if I can bring it down to 6.0. I'm not sure why the PH drifted up so much, as no water was being added yet. Maybe it's a MaxiGro thing?
Still no seedlings in two pods. I have soaked a few chicory and dandelion seeds overnight and put them in a damp paper towel in a ZipLoc bag to see if I can germinate them quicker that way. If not, then this garden won't be as full as I'd envisioned, sigh. I moved the pods around, so that the unsprouted pods are in the middle of each row.
I looked up the PH and EC requirements, they are slightly different between the Italian Dandelions (chicory) and Japanese Dandelions (dandelions). It may have been a mistake to try growing both in one garden, but too early to know.
Another annoyance, the bulb replacement light went on with the add nutrients light. I plan to try and push the bulbs another 6 months, given that I’m only growing greens. Is this wise? Unknown. But bulbs are no longer available for these old gardens, so...
Sorry about the lack of photos, but there's not much to see, other than the two profoundly unhappy Italian dandelion seedlings. The two Japanese dandelion seedlings are not above the pod covers yet. And I'm just plain busy!
