Seeds: Baker Creek Japanese DandelionPlanted: 2023-12-05, 4:30 PM Aerogarden: Harvest Elite Slim Location: North 40, kitchen counter Water: tap, filtered, Big Berkey, PH adjusted Grow Medium: 2009 AG Grow Anything sponge Preferred PH: 5.8-6.5 Preferred EC: 1.0-1.8 Nutrients: CALiMAGic 1.0 ml into reservoir AG Nutrients 4.0 ml into reservoir Nutrient mix PH: 5.5 Nutrient mix EC: 1.0 2023-12-05: Day 0 There are two older seedlings, from the AG 6E+, plus a couple Ziploc baggie germinated seeds placed into grow sponges. Currently soaking a few more dandelion seeds so that I have enough for all 6 grow spots. 2023-12-06: Day 1PH: 6.0 2023-12-09: Day 4Sprouts in 5 pods now, but one looks weak and spindly. I took the pre-soaked Japanese dandelion seeds out of the Ziploc baggie. One showed a tiny root, the other nothing yet, but I went ahead and planted them. One went into the empty spot, the other was added to the spot with the weak looking sprout. I'm hoping for six plants, but getting low on seeds and wondering if getting common dandelions instead would have been a better plan! If I turn out to like this variety, I may have to let them go to seed and collect!

2023-12-15: Day 10 Minimal progress. And, even with the AG nutrients, I'm getting what looks like a little seedling burn.
Further, I think that these seeds would benefit by being higher up in the pod basket, as they seem to start out with leaves going out more to the sides than up. I don't think they like the TPU covers for that reason. But I also don't think they are going to be keen on ANY cover at this point, because they sit lower in the baskets than that. I believe the key with these would be to get the top of the sponge right up at the top of the basket level, and then maybe use AG sticker labels (or third party substitute).
To be frank, I'm not keen on these seeds right now. Slow to germinate, slow progress, I'm planning to terminate and grow parsley instead. I have about 5-6 seeds left, maybe they can go in a pot outdoors early spring.
The whole reason for dandelions was I'd love to be able to make a specific green juice recipe that calls for parsley, cilantro, dandelion, and a bunch of other stuff (which I can get at the store). I figure if the chicory (Italian dandelion) garden gets going, then what I need more than these difficult plants is parsley.
I still want to try dandelions again, but I think I'll go with a more standard variety.

2023-12-21 TERMINATED I saw no evidence that these were even growing. The plants looked very unhappy and I've had enough. The garden has been sanitized and I've got parsley seeds soaking overnight to germinate via paper towel, so hopefully I can plant in a few days.
If I do true dandelions again, and I probably will, being a sucker for punishment, I'll go with a different variety.

I think we all are suckers for punishment with trying to get seeds and plants to grow. I know I am LOL

The current AG sponges sit lower in the baskets (farther below the grow deck) than the sponges sold 4-5 years ago. If you want to raise them up, you can add a clay pebble to the bottom of the basket. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GN9A6LK/

Because for the Classic 7 short baskets, I have to anyway, so "odds and ends" happen. I buy too much stuff for this hobby as it is, and I have a MASSIVE supply of grow sponges stashed!
