Project Slicing Tomatoes (Vivacious, Homeslice) [3/3/24]

58 days. The Farm 12XL isn't really big enough for two slicing tomato plants! I'm going to prune these (Vivacious and Homeslice) again tomorrow. Both have set a few tomatoes, so I'm keeping them until the tomatoes are big enough to taste. Then, if we like them, I'll restart them as solo plants in a Farm 12XL.

After Enlarging the pic I counted at least 8 Tomatoes and lots of flowers. Looks like you are well on the way to many Fruits to enjoy. Nice looking plants. 

These tomatoes are finishing their ripening on the countertop. (Two Vivacious fell off the plant.) The tomatoes are about 2" across. One Vivacious looks slightly red, but that area is actually deep orange. Viv is a yellow tomato.

It seems like they took forever to ripen, but the seed packets say you can harvest Vivacious about 70 days from transplanting; and Homeslice, 63 days after transplanting. Allowing 4-5 weeks for the seedlings to develop to the transplanting stage, the plants are more or less on schedule.

Today, at 133 days, I terminated the Homeslice and Vivacious plants. There were quite a few green tomatoes still on the vines, so they are now on the kitchen countertop for ripening.

The Homeslice seems to have a stronger tomato flavor than the Vivacious, but both varieties produce a pretty, smallish, slicing tomato with excellent color and texture.

If I remember correctly, the homeslice I grew had a very stout and stalky growth habit.

The Homeslice grew up into the lights, so I hacked it back about a week ago. It's still producing, even though it has been neglected, with fewer than usual R&Rs.

It has produced a few dozen small slicers with good flavor. They keep well on the kitchen countertop. I love having these available to use instead of the pale Romas that come with Hello Fresh meals!
