Half a million people in Harris County are still without power, so there is a substantial probability that they are not even able to get on line to check in here. Storms took down some major transmission towers, and the prognosis for repair is not in terms of hours or even days, but in some cases, weeks. Problem now is dealing with the heat and humidity to stay cool, because after a storm like this, Houston feels like being in a dog's mouth. Keep Cool and Carry On, and we hope to hear from you Houston folks soon.

After looking at the damage pictures that was a very nasty storm. Prayers go out to all affected that way. According to Poweroutage.us there are still over 328k people without power.

I saw on the internet that the neighborhood of Highlands had the highest recorded straight line winds at 78 mph...
I know that Sarah, slw, lives in Highlands. Please pray that she is ok.

Hello all and thanks for thinking of us. We are OK... no property damage but it was scary. No power/internet since last Thursday. I have limited connectivity but thank God for generators. My AGs are all toast.
Take care everyone. I hope Catherder is OK, too.

Echoing scarfguy's sentiments, slw! Living in tornado country is always scary, and climate change is making things even worse. Were your AGs fried, or did your plants all die?

Actually, tornadoes aren't that common in Houston. This "event" was called a Derecho, which is new to me. These storms used to be referred to as "straight line winds" and are very destructive. The whole thing moved through here at 85 MPH and was gone in less than 20 minutes. It did spawn tornadoes around the area, too.
The AGs are OK mechanically as far as I know. (No power to run them.) But all my remaining plants are goners. I'm kind of sad about the sweet heat pepper plant but that's life. I will leave them empty for a while; I'm AG'd out for now and want to go see my sister who lives 800 miles away.
Thanks again, everyone.

Fantastic news that you are ok slw and of course sounds like a good time to travel and go see family. Seeing damage pictures it could be awhile before you get power back. Thank you for posting that you are ok. Hopefully CatHerder is well too, and everyone else that was affected.

slw -- Glad you are OK, and I am sorry to hear you lost your plants. I hope you are keeping cool. I kind of recall Catherder saying she was in or around Cypress, which got slammed by one of the tornados, so power outages there are almost a certainty. Hopefully, we shall hear from her soon. . . . and climate change is making things even worse. I'm not sure about worse, but it is definitely shuffling things about. Tornado alley seems to be moving from the plains to the south and southeast, which is good for me because I live in Kansas, but a significant weather change for others. Still, your odds of actually being in a tornado are small. I have lived in the Midwest (Kansas, Missouri, and vicinity) all my life, and I have seen two. And both were from a comfortable distance.

Hello again, everyone. This was day 5 and finally our power came back on around 3:30 p.m. It was a miserable time but we are actually very fortunate--managed to run a window a/c, TV (OTA only), a freezer and our refrigerator with a generator. We have a gas stove and water heater so we had life's necessities... coffee and showers! I'm actually glad to have all my AGs cleaned out and shut down for a while.
Clovis Sangrail -- I believe CatHerder is from the Cypress area so I hope she is OK.

Clovis, I was just thinking that we never heard from CatHerder after the first storm.

I realized that when I was bringing up this thread, so I did some checking.
The victim in Cypress was an 85-year-old woman and her pit bull. Lightning struck the mobile home they were in and started a fire.
I'm pretty sure from internal evidence in her posts that Cat Herder is not an 85-year-old woman with a pit bull living in a mobile home.

Clovis, I was just thinking that we never heard from CatHerder after the first storm. I looked at our listings it has been awhile since she has been online. I have no way of contacting her. I hope she and anyone else involved is ok.

Hi everyone. Yes, I am again "in the dark" thanks to the hurricane. We are fortunate to have a generator, natural gas for stove and water heater, and uninterrupted water service. We had a small amount of property damage (fence, landscaping, etc.) and cleanup has been miserable in the heat and humidity.
I hope any other AGers who live in the path of the storm are all OK.

So happy to hear from you, Sarah!
Glad to hear you survived even though you're miserable in the heat of Texas!
Sounds like mother nature has provided you with yet another opportunity to plant your AGs!
We still haven't heard from CatHerder since the first storm. She last logged in on May 12th. Hope she is ok. Don't know if Shawn can try and contact her. Does shawn have a phone number or address associated with her registration?
