I know ya'll have been watching my grow bowl projects closely. Well, apparently it's not all fun and games- my strawberries tried to starve themselves last week. Got up in the morning and they were all droopy. I'd gone through them pretty thoroughly the day before looking for flowers or runners, so I thought maybe they were just mad, but after two days I got worried. Checked the water level and it was fine- you have to remove the sensor from the bowls, so it's easy to forget them between feedings. I lifted up the bowl and there was a solid mass of roots coming down the pipe for the pump. They had completely blocked off the pump. No Water was getting up. I didn't grab a photo of that, but I did grab a couple after I transferred them to a new bowl. The solid root mass may have been a problem for the pump, but it sure made picking up the whole thing and moving it easier. If you look in the center where the new cover, you can see the outline of where the old cover is completely hidden by roots. After I cut it out, here is the old cover and the mass of roots that was underneath it. The phrase "too healthy for their own good" comes to mind... Now I'm onto them and won't let them do it again. I had the pump run a couple extra times to get the coco grow fully saturated again and they are looking just fine.

Oh wow. Bummer that this is such a risk with the roots and system. I’m so glad you caught it when you did.

It makes sense when you think about it- they are trying to grow towards water, and that spout it where the water comes from. That little cap isn't much of a challenge for a determined plant. Just need to do a cleanup pass every so often, just like with the pump intake with the regular grow deck.
