On day 12 with my new hobby! Started out with three salad greens pods while waiting for my smoothie pod mix to come in. It took two days for one of the lettuce pods to sprout and I got the smoothie pods five days in. Mustard Greens and Kale from the smoothie mix had sprouted but not a peep from the original two salad pods so I planted two more. Those are beginning to sprout so I removed the bum pods. I enjoy waking up or coming home from work and checking the progress. My first lettuce pod is taking off!

It is exciting to see everything sprout!. Before you know it you will be tasting your sweet (or green) rewards.

Day 18 and my lettuce and mustard greens are growing like crazy! The lettuce is getting close to the lights but I’m hesitant to raise it because it would cause the mustard greens and especially the kale and my other two lettuce pods in the back to start reaching.

Maybe when you cut some back of the large plant they will all catch up.

Aphids made a bum rush to my kale! Nice big juicy ones too so they must have been there for a while and I didn’t notice. They only seem to have touched the kale and not the lettuce or mustard. I took the pod out and ran it under my sink’s sprayer. It looks like I got the vast majority of them but I’m sure I didn’t get them all. Should I just toss the plant?

I personally have never had Aphids so I really do not know what to tell you. I personally would ditch the whole project. But that is just me. I do know others have had issues in the past but do not know how they resolved it or if they kept or terminated them.

I would. Bugs are creepy. There was a gal on AGFB that had ants and they were not only living in the plants, but all inside the deck cover that snaps on . I have no idea how it was cleaned up, but those bugs have a way of finding other homes. A tummy full of aphid larvae blending in with the leaves? Yummy! Not to gross you out , but they are probably all down inside where you can't see them.
Boiling water, Dawn soap, and Bleach works for me .

I have had big aphid problems before owing to my AG’s proximity to outdoor projects. In researching, I learned that aphids reproduce so fast that at some stages babies are born with what are essentially embryos already inside them. Lightening fast reproduction. So yes at a minimum I’d toss the kale but, I hate to say it, probably everything, and don’t replant for a couple of weeks. I know it’s terribly frustrating.

Putting the kale back after washing the leaves was a mistake. The next day they were back and some migrated to the mustard. They were concentrated on one leaf so I got rid of that mustard leaf and trashed the kale. I also sprayed the mustard and my lettuce with a mixture of soap, water, and cayenne pepper. That was a few days ago and I haven’t seen any new aphids. Of course, now I’m paranoid and I’m inspecting any particle on my leaves with my magnifying glass! I also pulled a second lettuce harvest today. No sign of aphids on them so I washed them carefully and had salad for dinner. The two newer pods in the back are coming in nicely. I’m going to do a plain water flush for the weekend. If no aphids show up, I’ll add nutes back in on Monday.

Nasty aphids! Your plants look great, however!

Nasty aphids! Your plants look great, however! Thanks! The purple mustard leaves are getting so big that they’re depriving the green mustard from getting much light. It’s been 20 days since it sprouted so I may harvest some of the purple leaves. The mustard is supposed to get tall. It may be stunted because I’m feeding the tank with only enough nutes to keep the lettuce happy. Next time I will only grow plants with the same PH and PPM requirements together. I guess that means I need another AeroGarden!

It's a slippery slope, my friend. I started with receiving a gift Sprout in December. In February, I bought myself an Extra. This week, I bought myself a Bounty. At this rate, I'll own the whole Aerogarden company in a year!

That mustard is spectacular!
Im so happy for you that you’ve reduced the aphid population so significantly. I should’ve done that soap spray. That’s one thing I never tried.

Found fresh aphids on one mustard leaf. Decided to get Garden Safe Garden Insect Killer and sprayed everything. Hopefully this works.
Today the purple mustard leaves weren’t looking to good so I decided to harvest them. After a through washing, I sautéed them in olive oil with onion, garlic, vegetable broth and seasoned with salt, pepper, and sesame oil. Very good! There were only enough leaves for one small serving though.
Felt good to cook with veggies I grew myself!

Felt good to cook with veggies I grew myself! Isn’t that great?!! It is very rewarding. And, I’ve read that greens grown hydroponically are higher in vitamins, so that’s an additional bonus. Let let us know how that garden spray works out. I have a terrible time with aphids in my outdoor greens garden.
