I imagine it can help in determining if the bulb has faded, but I don’t think it can measure the individual spectrums. If I understand the AG literature correctly, the bulbs still appear quite bright at 6 months but no longer have enough of one or more or the spectrums that the plants need. In fact I bought adapters to use the 6 month+ old bulbs in closets and such because they’re still perfectly bright for such use but not for growing things. Except lettuce.
What I’ve done in the past is plug in a brand new bulb next to the suspected older ones because if the old one is old enough you can kind of see the difference. Just don’t look at them for long! I now also write the start date on my new bulbs. Because there’s no way I’m going to remember so many of them!

Mary, do you mean that your lettuce does okay even with older bulbs? Hope so! Very good suggestions, Mary. Thanks!

Lettuce does ok. It just grows slower and not as robust, maybe a bit spindly. But you can still grow it and enjoy and consume it, unlike, say, a pepper plant which really needs newer bulbs. In an ideal world you could plant all lettuce gardens and see which ones grow slowest, and toss those bulbs. (Hah). I think Choi might be ok too, just smaller.

I ordered this www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004K0A7I6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and tried it out. The measurements below (in lux x 100) below are very rough, as I haven't figured out how to keep a uniform distance from the light source: Classic 7 CFL 150-180 (Edit: One of my newer ones registers at 260. I'll edit again after I replace bulbs in the older ones.) Classic 7 LED 210-240 Ultra LED 320 Harvest Premium Finish 500 Harvest Plus 600

Very interesting range of light! I’m intrigued that the Harvests are so much higher than the 7 LED.

I imagine that it might be because the harvests have the same wattage within a smaller area. ?

Hi Mary, All of my Ultras were purchased new from AG this year, and they're all LED.
The measurements below are lower than my previous post below, because I just laid the sensor on the deck, rather than holding it closer to the lights:
My Ultra deck: My Harvest deck:

My Harvest sits beside the Ultra I can see the difference. Wasn't sure if the tomatoes in the Ultra was sucking up a lot of light. I'm sprouting sweet and hot peppers in the harvest. Wasn't expecting that much difference! Was the ultra and the harvest lights set at the same height? Thanks. Don

The first set of measurements ( aerogardenaddicts.com/post/12353 ) were taken at approximately the same distance from the hood. The second set (in which I show a photo aerogardenaddicts.com/post/14546 ) were taken by laying the sensor on the deck, so the Harvest was considerably closer to the lights.

Yes, it was visual. They sit next to each other, so it looked pretty obvious. That for the information! It's always nice to know. Sorry for the late response. Thanks again. Don

I posted this a year ago, but it might interest those of you who want to compare light output from various models.
As I mentioned in another post, Farms and Harvests seem to be too bright for my romaines (but not for leafy lettuces, chard, collards or bok choi). So I'll often raise the lights, particularly in my Farms.
