Bulbs

My guess would be that the bulb would rot if not fitted properly into the basket.. I have planted bulbs in those special bulb vases which are designed to just let a small tip of the bottom rest in the water and the roots grew down into the water.

If you can get a bulb the size so that it fits rising up out of the basket it may work.

Or you could get some bulb vases and start them off, then when the roots grow down , stick them in the baskets and let the bulbs sit on top.

Something like shallots would be too pointy IMO.

It is worth a try, and would make a great experiment.  I say go for it!
