Finished the Harvest Cheat Mark I design today. I’m fully prepared for this to not fit. I’m sure there will need to be measurement tweaks given how much rounding I did. However, I think the general structure of it looks right. I just sent the first print over to the lab at work. I’ll pick it up on Monday and tweak based on the result.

As expected the Mark I Cheat is not quite up to snuff. Looks like I was off by a millimeter or so in one direction. It should be an easy fix for Mark II though. Even with the mistake I think this made for a nice proof of concept though. I should have the Harvest Cheat ready for reproduction soon!

I decided not to bore you all with the details of the Mark II and Mark III designs since they were both iterative and incorrect. However, the Mark IV is very close to what I’d want the final version to look like. The minor changes I want to make in Mark V: 1. I’m going to bring the top of the piece up to be level with the tops of the basket ports. This won’t look as nice, but it won’t require each piece to be trimmed after printing (which is what the Mark IV design requires). 2. Add a lip to the bottom of the basket ports to prevent light leaks to the tank. 3. Add a small bit on the back to fill in the gap between the Cheat and the part where the original water port cover attaches to the deck. Again, this is to prevent a light leak into the tank. I think that should do it though. Almost there!

Between what you have shown and what drbanks has done is amazing. Dawn has made some covers for the holes and also a cute container that has a twist lid.

My covers pale in comparison, mainly because I just copied the model off Thingiverse.
My light hood extender rods are a little bit more of me, because I've actually ended up creating the models in software like Fusion 360.
But this is brill.
At one point, I was putting some serious thought into printing a replacement grow deck that would accept standard 2" net pots, but ultimately, two things stopped me:
1) I need a bigger printer, or I'll need to print the deck in multiple parts and glue them together. And when I try to glue parts together, I usually end up with parts that are still separate, but with my fingers glued together.
2) can't really think of a good way of shunting the water from the interior of the grow plate to drip more or less to the middle of the net pot without having to resort to little inch long pieces of plastic tubing, or ending with a design in which the pots are only insertable/removable by taking the grow deck apart (as you would do when cleaning).

Oh yeah, and the cute container was just someone else's remix of Emmet's print-in-place iris box (to use lingo that makes sense only to 3D printing buffs).

Nick, this is beyond cool!!! I just saw this otherwise I would have squealed my excitement when you first posted this. (Apologies to all, I’ve been away and have tried to jump on and off here and there but have missed a ton). I am amazed at your ingenuity.

Unfortunately life has slowed me down after that initial bout of productivity. Shouldn't be long before I can finish up the final design though. 🙂

I would be interested in picking one up. No rush, Nick!

Alright, I've given up on chasing perfection with this one because time just won't allow for it. However, I *think* I've got a good enough design done now. I'll do one last test print at the office this week and if it looks good I'll upload the files to Thingiverse for everyone. And of course Shawn and Happy are going to be the first recipients of these when they're done!

I do have a few questions. 1. If you guys don't use the fill hole tomput water in, how DO you fill? 2. What is "Thingiverse"? 3. Is this design for the older Harvest models only? I got mine at Christmas and I keep seeing things that say the new one isn't compatible with the old accessories and such! Thanks!
