I do not know about spinach.
As for lettuce I know certain varieties are bitter. What are you growing?

My lettuce tastes fine. There is a bitter note to it, but I think most lettuce is bitter.
I know that having the wrong ratio of nutrients can affect taste. This shouldn't be a big deal if you are using AG nutrient mixes. Ph can also impact taste. You shouldn't need to adjust this, but if your water is especially acidic or basic it is a possible cause.

The lettuces grown in the AG are loose leaf and they are usually on the bitter side. Ever try butter crunch? That may be a bit milder for you. Also, try harvesting leaves early. Old leaves are more bitter.

this afternoon I had a LOT of my red salad bowl lettuce on a sandwich and ,to me, it was not bitter at all. But, then again, I am used to eating loose leaf.

my lettuces always taste bitter. Anything I can do to prevent that ? I know what you mean. I do think hydroponically grown lettuce has a bitterness level not present in soil grown. My and my neighbor’s soil grown lettuces are sweeter, for lack of a better description. I only notice it when it’s in a salad (or otherwise eaten plain), so I add some honey or Splenda to my vinaigrette to try to counterbalance it.

I think that it is at least partially the variety of lettuce. The AG lettuces are far more bitter than the Burpee Bibb I grew before I got the AGs.

I use custom seeds, same in AG and outside.

Nutrient mix maybe? I was using GH Flora series in a 3-2-1 mix on the Burpee Bibb.

I've been thinking about doing a test- use Flora series on one side of my lettuce Farm and AG nutes on the other. Might shed some light on whether or not that's affecting the flavor.

Might think of cheating and supplementing it with some flora nectar, but like I said, that's cheating.

What else was on your sandwich? I bet it was nice and crunchy too. It was simply a rotisserie chicken salad on a challah bun.

I don;t think it is 'cheating' any more than when we use Mr Mucha Stash or a heavier concentration of one of the 3 part nutes like part 1 , or a Phosphorus Bloom Booster similar to part 3, or Ph Up or Down solutions.
