I have been reading a lot on this forum for the past week or ten days, learning more and getting lots of good ideas. I got a Bounty at the end of April, as a gift for my 75th birthday. I planted that with two mini-tomatoes, a few romaine, and a handful of herbs. The romaine started bolting after about a month and I read here that it may want to be cooler, which makes sense.
It soon became clear that I "NEEDED" more growing space, So I ordered a Farm XL and have started s few different cherry tomatoes on one side and on the other side one bell pepper and two patio tomatoes. I also tucked in a dill plant, moved the mint from my Bounty, and started some chives from seed as the chives from Aerogarden didn't have enough stems for me. Twelve days in with the Farm XL and everything is doing well except the Golden tomato that came with the unit has not sprouted. I pulled out the pod to look at it and it looked like the water never wicked up the growing medium properly as only the bottom half inch or so was wet and the rest was fresh-out-of-the-box dry dry dry. So I soaked the pod in a glass of water today and got the sponge wet and then popped the pod back in the garden. We'll see if that worked or if I should start another pod.
I have ordered a Bounty Elite and will use that to have more light for herbs, while repurposing my original Bounty Basic for salad greens. I haven't figured out the best place for my two mini tomatoes that I have in the Bounty Basic. Maybe I'll try moving one of them to the Bounty Elite and leaving one where it is. I am trying out a Greek mini basil in my new herb garden as well as italian and curly parsley, lemon balm, italian oregano, greek oregano, rosemary.
And now I'm thinking about moving the Genovese basil to a Kratky jar. I've got it bad!

Welcome virginiab ! Yes you have it bad like the rest of us  Hence the Forum name  May I ask if you have made sure the Farm is level? If off even a little it can make the water ports for certain holes not put out the proper amount of water. I keep a level near my Farms to check now and them especially if I move them any.

If off even a little it can make the water ports for certain holes not put out the proper amount of water. I keep a level near my Farms to check now and them especially if I move them any.
Shawn, thanks for your suggestion. I just checked and the Farm is level. (And I have now added a small level to the storage compartment for future checks.) I have started a second golden tomato, after soaking it overnight. I'll see if one of the two exhibits signs of life in the next few weeks. |
