What happens if a plant gets too tall and you want to take it out but the roots are all intertwined with the other plants? I am on day 240. Dill is long gone and my Thai basil is bolting and Genovese basil is all woody with only leaves at the top. My parsleys, mint, chives and thyme are in good shape. Must I start over from scratch?
Just try to detangle the roots as best you can, then remove the unwanted plants. You will tear and lose a lot of roots, but healthy plants should recover.
Start with fresh water and nutrients to help the plants bounce back.
If the roots are long and stringy, you can snip some of the straggly ones with clean scissors to even them up. They should quickly regenerate.
Best of luck!

hauspl4nt, I always turn my plants. Doing this forms a soft root ball that aides in the roots not tangling and getting into the pump too bad. While they still do catch on to other roots it is a lot easier to de-tangle them later. I have a picture of them somewhere.

You can probably safely snip away at the roots. Chances are the healthy plants have enough roots to get water and nutrients.

With the Genovese basil, I've taken mine down to almost nothing to prevent light blocking other plants and have been amazed at how much it springs back. It seems to almost encourage it. I think basils are unkillable in AGs.

Thanks everyone for the great hints about my slightly overgrown garden. In my second AG I will turn my tomatoes to make a root ball. They are 21 days old and looking good so far. Maybe I can salvage my basils as well.

Just saying hi, and thanks for the welcome shout-out! I joined a few weeks ago to do some prereading before my farm arrived and now I'm on day 3 of growing tomatoes on one side, basil and lettuce on the other. Thanks to the advice I read here we started 3 tomatoes, not 12. Today the lettuce and basil are sprouting! And I'm debating where in the house we could fit another unit for my birthday next month

islandcaribu, congratulations on your successful garden planting!
But, oh dear! I am afraid that you may have contracted the Aerogarden addiction bug already!
You are in great company! We look forward to updates!

Welcome to the forum! I hope what you have read so far is helpful and that we are able to continue that help as you start your new gardens. What unit do you this you would want for your Birthday?

islandcaribu, I do not have a Farm, but I love my Bountys. My favorite feature is how portable they are. You can move them anywhere you want. And they are so easy to dump and refill.
It all comes down to what you prefer and have room for.
Happy choosing!

Thank you! My husband got me the stainless bundle that included a Harvest and a Bounty, and also the Farm 24XL. It wasn't really much of a surprise since I kept showing him when certain things went on sale, but I was thrilled to get them!
I have herbs for the Harvest, tomatoes for the Bounty, and the Farm is half tomatoes, half lettuces/herbs (though I can currently only grow in one half of my garden due to the issue mentioned in my other thread). I decided to start the lettuces in the half of the Farm that's working, even though I may end up needing to ship part or all of the unit back for replacement.
Some of the lettuces already look like they're starting to sprout after 2 days!

Thank you - glad I found you all. Was very pleasantly surprised to receive a Farm XL24 for Christmas. Moved into a house (from an apartment) 2 years ago and finding gardening an enjoyable way to spend time; but definitely missing it during the winter months so glad I'll now be able to tend to something 365 days a year! Started out with 6 cherry tomatoes and 2 peppers on one side and a bunch of lettuce and herbs on the other. Expect it'll get crowded but figured I'd throw a bit of everything at it until I decide what I use the most and what grows best and might get a little more precise for round two whenever that is. Learning lots from all the posts here and hope that I can add to the community. Happy New Year! We are so glad you joined us! Thanks for the warm welcome. We dove in hard, ordered a Farm 12 XL, Bounty, and a Harvest slim from BB. Will be picking up the two smaller ones this week but already have tomatoes and jalapeños sprouting in the farm. This will all be in our 5th wheel camper. We travel and live full time in our RV.
Tomatoes and peppers in the farm, lettuce in the bounty and herbs in the harvest is plan. Or should swap the herbs and lettuce?

I find that for volume consumed I need to grow more lettuce than herb, so I would keep it as you plan and do lettuce in the bounty and herbs in the harvest (which is how mine are going right now) Just my $0.02

You will need to prune the larger herbs often in the Harvest. But you would also have to prune them in the Bounty to keep them shaped and healthy. So I would use the extra space for lettuce.
And if you change your mind, you can always switch it around next time.
And having a garden in an RV is just awesome!
